Assesments for students with disabilities

Assessments for students with disabilities are required by law, and schools must ensure that the evaluation is sufficiently comprehensive to identify all of the child’s special education and related services needs, whether or not commonly linked to the disability category in which the child has been classified

. Here are some ways that schools can ensure adequate assessment for students with disabilities:

  • Accommodations: IDEA permits children with disabilities to participate in large-scale assessment programs with accommodations

    . Common accommodations include enlarging fonts, providing digital devices to display or record responses, allowing interpretation through braille or sign language, providing students with additional time, providing a separate room, and adjusting lighting and audio settings

  • Formative Assessment: Formative assessment is an ongoing process that can help teachers identify areas where students with disabilities may need additional support

  • Alternate Assessment: In some cases, alternative approaches to assessment may be required for students with more severe disabilities, such as assessments with different content
