This summer, I made serious observations about depression and anxiety in children and teens. It is shocking to know that depression and anxiety coexist and make life unbearable for children and teens. I came across a study conducted in 2019 where brain scans were compared in those with current mental health conditions to those with no diagnosis. They found “that people suffering from mental illnesses had decreased activity in parts of the brain that are involved in stopping cognitive processes and switching to new ones. In other words, people suffering from depression, anxiety, or PTSD were less able to turn off those thoughts and feelings and switch to different thoughts and feelings. The results of the brain scans showed that they also had trouble switching from one task to the next”

I would like to propose the development of a problem-based learning experience centered on the theme of "tackling anxiety and depression." In this regard, I prepared written resources and descriptions of interactive strategies on Nowcomment that focus on supporting students to come up with a solution to this question: "How to tackle anxiety and depression"

Exploring this question will get our learners to reflect on anxiety and depression on a personal level. Students will be enlightened on the factors that cause anxiety and depression and how class activities and cooperation as well as tolerance of each other can aid to amelioration of depressive tendencies. This is essential because I believe that students should contribute to the norms for their classroom. It is crucial to create a learning environment that gives less prominence to factors that cause anxiety and depression.

During this learning experience, students can share their perspectives on what anxiety and depression means to them. To help them get deeper into solutions, they can learn more about anxiety and depression using classroom situations. We could invite the psychologist as a special guest so that students can learn more from an expert. Ultimately, we will have the learners develop solutions for how to tackle anxiety and depression.

Problem solving has become so complex that no one person can go it alone. No one has access to all the data needed to make critical decisions; no one person can consider as many alternatives as several people." This problem based learning experience will help our students understand the power of collaboration and that many voices lead to plenty of possible solutions.
