La definición de argumento es una forma de razonamiento que justifica una postura respecto a algo, a través de un conjunto de premisas y una conclusión lógicamente extraída de ellas. Argumentar, por ende, significa dar argumentos al otro, tal y como hacen los abogados durante un juicio para intentar convencer al jurado. Según Guadalupe Bérmuez (2017): Estos forman parte de los discursos y las opiniones, pero no siempre son válidos o convenientes. Por eso, no siempre tienen éxito en defender una postura, o sea, en convencer o motivar a una acción. Por ejemplo, una discusión típicamente consiste en dos o más personas intercambiando argumentos para tratar de hacer que los demás piensen un asunto como ellos lo hacen.

Premisa: Las premisas son el punto de partida de un razonamiento (que permite demostrar, justificar o refutar algo). A partir de las premisa comienza la labor inductiva o deductiva.
