Dan D(Feb 04 2025 8:53AM):
The word isn't strongly visible to me in yellow, I think we want it to stand out even more than "Cville" (in black) stands out.

Wondering if both words could stand out using the same color (black or red or whatever) so viewer’s eye links them together as a 2-word phrase.
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:00AM):
It's size and top-of-image placement will I think make it the first element a viewer's eye goes to I think, and to me not that evocative... I'd suggest the first strong element be something more evocative of whatever our main idea/theme is.

Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:05AM):
This is a fairly formal and static pose, not strongly evoking a fiesta fun vibe, which is what I liked so much about last year's.
[Edited]more
Them dancing together would be a step in the direction of dynamism, but even then a logo of 2 people dancing would make me think more like a dance concert/exhibition, something I might go to to watch a folk danc performancee… it doesn’t communicate to me that there will be lots of people dancing and I could be one of them!

Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:14AM):
Took me a moment to get what this was, maybe cuz this is just a rough and details later will make it clearer.

Flower is pretty big, my eye is drawn to it (secondarily, black male costume dominates) but as-is I don’t think contributes much to the overall effect.
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 1:29PM):
I think flower should be one that we would find in Central or South America, Carrie ban or Mexico, what do you think?

Just for brainstorming purposes, Google search results for most popular Latin American flowers include these hits:

Maria G(Feb 14 2025 8:18PM):
It is a type of blossom. This flower can be any flower we want it to be, it’s just blossoms are (in my opinion) very vibrant and easier to draw in the petals and speak on some flower motifs in latinoamericanos

Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:17AM):
Lack of any stylized eyes/nose/mouth evokes in me (only semi-consciously) a vague feeling that these aren't human, maybe dummies or are just robots.
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 1:31PM):
Maria, I think your attempt here is to keep country representation out but may be we can do something else with the dancers? As you saw Estela's comments she felt these were representative of Mexico too much which isn't inclusive to other countries.
Maria G(Feb 14 2025 8:16PM):
I agree. I think I am going to go with a different approach here. I’m working on an idea that has people dancing on a music note with party elements surrounding, may not associate their attire to any specific country
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 10 2025 2:25PM):
What is the spec for how/where the logo is to be used?
[Edited]more
1. Size - Presumably it will usually be pretty small (e.g. in ads, graphics, etc.)… I’m guessing more than 1-2 figures might be too much for the space we’ll want to devote to the logo. See this Google Doc that I shared with Andrea and Maria that has sample ads from 2024: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-JoHIVOv_oAxG3TUSoxaHWLjrtTn7Y7d3mLHQfHsoTU
2. Not country-specific
3. What emotion/feeling do we want it to convey (most important!?) — last year Maria and I went for fiesta fun (super colorful, emphasized dance and food and music).
4. What demographic do we want to appeal to? I figured we could already largely count on middle-aged and older Latinos who have been attending for years, I felt (and still feel) that to maximize the funds we can raise we want to also strongly appeal to younger non-Latinos… hence the fun food dancing emphasis. I think logo should dovetail with whatever (hopefully this! :→) emotion/feeling is chosen.
Maria G(Feb 14 2025 8:17PM):
I agree, it makes me want to not have much detail on the dancers at all to keep it simple and not bring in discussion on their form/attire/color of attire etc
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:22AM):
This note being different from the others (green vs. orange/red and not mixed in with the others but being at one end, and maybe slightly bigger than some of the others) was a little distracting to me, I was trying to figure out if it signified something.
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:19PM):
was the goal here to highlight 'Sabroso' because so many in our community shorten it to this single word? If so maybe using a Blue color would be good since we have some that are color blind, I think blue translate regardless. What do you think?
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 04 2025 8:56AM):
Unclear to me what this represents or how connected with Cville Sabroso Festival.
[Edited]more
It’s also the top one that people will see first, so I think we want that petal to be the strongest, most evocative of whatever our main theme is (e.g. last year was party, with lots of music and dancing).
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:25PM):
I love the city skyline to connect the festival to having it in the city. Is it possible to use Charlottesville type images? Or something representative of downtown Cville?
[Edited]
Maria G(Feb 14 2025 8:21PM):
This is supposed to represent cville skyline (‘city’). I am not sure what would represent cville best so I thought montanas and sunset with a little building symbol was best. Maybe the historic - esque building may be better
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 15 2025 8:00AM):
see above, Ting and the Downtown Mall suggest Charlottesville as much as any other building or scene (now that Jefferson/Monticello are no longer cool)

Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:09AM):
We have the dress, but no human body... this logo has no people in it!! To me, the main thing we want to commmunicate is "big party", and none of the elements here do that.
[Edited]more
I like the general abstract feel of the drawing a lot, could be the style we decide to go with, but I think the graphic as a whole would benefit from having active people pictured.
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:28PM):
Could we add dancers to this petal? Or maybe Artisan merchandise to capture the art part of the festival? arets, coyares, cinchos, etc.
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 10 2025 3:51PM):
In super brainstorm mode here... maybe two (or more) petals with one dancer each on them could be intertwined or next to each other in a way that suggested some generic Latin dance move!!??
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 04 2025 9:11AM):
Good match with the style of the graphic, but I wonder if a stronger/bolder font (like logo 1) would implant better in viewers' brains!?
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:38PM):
No This logo needs to stay independent of the date an time. This logo will be the one we use for years to come no matter where we hold the festival.
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 08 2025 10:36AM):
Estela prefers the original logo (her reasons quoted below)
[Edited]more
“…But personally I really like the original logo, as the Dancers in the center are not country specific and it includes all of the Latin American flags around it. It’s easy to pop in a social or put on a hat or shirt. You could always use the same idea and change the font in the center. I think it’s important for the logo to be inclusive of all the countries of Latin America and not to busy. Our original logo was created by chicho Lorenzo and the flags circling it was an idea edit by hector zamora.
If the team is committed to changing it. I would suggest not having clothing that resembles a mariachi or stuff that is clearly country specific. If these are the two choices, between the two my choice would be the four leaf flower design. But personally would appreciate it staying the same."

Dan D(Feb 10 2025 9:48AM):
Fanny says "I agree with Estela about the Cville Sabroso Logo. Personally, the leaf logo it's nice. I don't see a logo for Cville Sabroso.."
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:41PM):
Estela does not know the feedback that we have received about the logo over the years from the community. Chicho is her good friend but the original logo has major issues ad he did it in 5 minutes as a favor.
I’m the head/founder of Fairness.com LLC. We really hope you … (more)
Dan D(Feb 10 2025 3:54PM):
I too agree with Andrea that a very colorful and dynamic logo (to convey fun, food, dancing, frolicing) would help boost attendance and reinforce our message that Sabroso is a super fun event!!
[Edited]
Andrea J(Feb 10 2025 2:42PM):
I want us to redesign with the goal in mind that it will be a logo we can reuse for at least a decade. Or more. Or until a new director comes and a new young vibrant latino/a comes along with new ideas.

Flower symbolism in Latin America:
https://www.petalandpoem.com/floral-thoughts/flowers-in-latin-american-culture
The most traditional Latin-American flowers are the rose, the cockspur coral, the orchid, and the cantuta.
Some of the most popular flowers in Latin America include dahlias, roses, orchids, and marigolds.

I’d recommend treating both similarly in terms of realism/abstractness.

If we ever stop using Ting, we could swap out just that one petal image.
And maybe even could leave it in in that case, Ting and the Downtown Mall suggest Charlottesville as much as any other building or scene!?
