Cartoonist is trying very hard to create an illusion of depth. Note the lamps, the hatching and cross-hatching, and the vanishing point. I think the whole purpose of that is to make sure that the painting on the wall is believable in a spatial sense. Because…well, the painting is damned funny and full of subtext about very famous disasters in history.

Can you identify all the disasters? And what is the subtext? The positioning of the painting is significant, too. I think the cartoonist is making a physical metaphor: what is ‘behind’ the nonsense that is happening in the foreground.

There are levels of context here, some current and some very deep. The deep stuff is probably what I call subtext, cultural and history pretext to the cartoon that lends its own kind of depth just as much as perspective and vanishing point do.

Cheap shot? Yeah, gotta get in a little fat shaming here. I have always said Christie never had a real shot at being prez because he was too fat. We haven’t had a fat president since Taft.

Here is my analytic framework. It is just a way in and by no means the only one.
Of course, I “read” the whole gestalt quickly. There will usually be a click of acknowledgement or not. If I have been following the news carefully I get the click.
Either way the next task is to dive into the text, the context, and the subtext.
The text is what is literally on the page. I will put comment boxes around all of the items I want to discuss with you. If I don’t box something you want to talk about, well sign up for NowComment and add it yourself. This is a public document.
The context is the news and history that the cartoon ‘swims’ in. Some of this will be contemporaneous and current, but others bits of it will be cultural and historical.
The subtext usually arises from the context and text. Here we are trying to understand the cartoonist’s purpose and point of view. Why did he create the cartoon and what does it reflect about how he or she views the world.
