Watch the music video for the Disturbed version of the Sound of Silence. You have two objectives to complete before moving on to the second video.
1. Try to give the video a theme. Is this addressing a social issue, political protest, etc.? Once you decide on a theme, leave a short comment at different scenes in the video that you think are symbolic.
2. After you complete your comments, go to the end of the video and leave a summary that explains why the scenes you chose are symbolic to your theme. What do they stand for?
Watch the performance of The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. This video does not contain a theme, imagery, etc. Imagine you are charged with creating a video that uses this version of the song. You are not allowed to change it in any way. However, you may choose any theme that you think is appropriate. Complete the two objectives below to finish today's assignment:
3. Once you choose your theme or plot, create a 1-sentence comment at the beginning that describes your video. Create 3-4 events or scenes with short descriptions and places these scenes or events on the timeline as a comment.
4. When you have completed your scenes, choose one classmate's assignments to review. Watch the video again and reply to their scenes or events.

First off, I have always loved this song. Truthfully I only watched the first video but this really makes the students do some very in depth cognitive thinking. Your questions really make them explore the lyrics and the meaning behind them. Great choice and I think this would be something to consider using in your classroom.
