I think the rain was so bad that it was starting to cause miniature floods and cause leeks to start forming in the house which allowed water inside which then maybe the crabs were pulled in with the water into the house. (P)

The fact that they were picking his feathers out in hopes that they might be healed is a prime example. Throwing rocks and burning him when he sleeps also shows how people think that everything is responsible for their happiness and entertainment.

They seemed to treat themselves and their child well. They didn't even clean the coop for the angel's benefit, only so they wouldn't have to smell it.
