Jane White(Nov 07 2017 1:20PM):
I wonder why they killed so many crabs. It couldn't have been to eat, because Pelayo had to throw them out in to the sea.
Florence Paull(Nov 09 2017 4:24PM):
I think that the story implies that they had flooding in the house and they had to kill the crabs, almost like humans having to kill cockroaches when they get in the house.
more
Brenda Paull(Nov 09 2017 3:19PM):
Since it says "On the third day of rain...killed so many crabs inside the house" I can infer that flooding was bringing the crabs inside the house.
more
Brenda Paull(Nov 09 2017 3:21PM):
This shows that this is magical realism because it talks about the man's wings as if they were normal and commonplace.
more
Brenda Paull(Nov 30 2017 9:50AM):
Since the baby was sick they thought that he was sent to take the baby's soul away as in that the baby would die and he was an angel that took the dead up when their time came.
more
It doesn’t make sense though because the baby got better after he came.
Jack Naglick(Dec 29 2017 11:58AM):
In the real version, Marquez says that "The world had been sad since Tuesday." I really like this explanation, but it is not in this version. (S)
Isabel Arroyo(Jan 12 2018 12:39PM):
I think this passage implies that there has been torrential rain for 3 days and there is so much water that it has flooded the house and lots of crabs have started to enter the house so the inhabitants are killing them, like how someone would kill bugs.
I think the rain was so bad that it was starting to cause miniature floods and cause leeks to start forming in the house which allowed water inside which then maybe the crabs were pulled in with the water into the house. (P)
Kate Southerland(Feb 15 2018 2:26PM):
I am assuming that (in this case) the crabs are household pests, and that Pelayo and his wife are having to exterminate them.
more
Jaden Klebba(Jun 05 2018 8:55PM):
Already the author is setting in the dynamic of the story. They live by the sea and they may not have the sturdiest house, or maybe it's in older times. Based on reading the biography of Gabriel Marquez, this is influenced by the times back then.
Yerin Yang(Dec 13 2017 10:40PM):
I wonder why there were so many crabs inside the house in the first place. By "they" do they mean Pelayo and his family killing the crabs because they were stuck inside the house and had nothing else to do? A
Damien NEZAR(Jan 23 2018 5:03AM):
In that era
more
In those times especially in those European countries, they were very religious and believed in many things. There are 2 scenarios here, 1 is that it could be a real angel here to heal the child or 2 is that it is a mystical creature from somewhere beyond that coincidentally landed in the courtyard. (P)
Lauren Grover(Feb 05 2018 3:30AM):
This is a good moment of suspense and tension in the story. When she says that the angel had come for the child, it makes me wonder what happened to the child, and if he or she was okay.
Michael Simutis(Jan 11 2018 5:33PM):
This story begins in a completely ordinary manner, to emphasize the realistic situation the characters are originally in. S
Lilla Carroll(Jan 27 2018 4:14PM):
I love the unacknowledged absurdity of this piece! It makes the story almost humorous, despite its dark, unhappy tone.
[Edited]
Jaden Klebba(Jun 05 2018 8:56PM):
I thought it would be an animal. What are these wings? Is it a blanket that looks like wings? Is it symbolizing something bigger?
Elijah McMillin(Jan 13 2018 3:08PM):
It may be one of those things like the way people were treated several hundred years ago if they were believed to be witches.
Brenda Paull(Nov 09 2017 3:29PM):
If they thought that he was an angel, how did they explain his dirty and miserable appearance which would be the exact opposite of an angel.
more
Student Kate Nelson(Nov 29 2017 11:49AM):
They said he fell out of the sky because of the rain and that he was so old. I do see your point, though, because he wanted to take their child. I don't understand why an angel would do that.
I enjoy meteorology, hiking , and studying my Bible. :-)
Mason Kimball(Feb 02 2018 1:44PM):
Actually that's not exactly true. Angels aren't supposed to be aesthetically pleasing. This could very well be an angel.
Florence Paull(Nov 09 2017 4:12PM):
I wonder how Pelayo and Elisenda didn't feel bad that they decided to take advantage of the old man because they could make money out of it. It only seems like common sense to help someone in need, not use them.
more
Florence Paull(Nov 09 2017 4:15PM):
These "most unfortunate and sick people on earth" must have been part of 'Magical Realism' because they aren't a normal kind of sick in our world.

Jack Naglick(Dec 29 2017 11:50AM):
Even though people are treating the angel like a circus animal, they think that he should be made mayor of the world or a five-star general. If they truly thought this, wouldn't they show more respect? (A)
Karsyn Bierbaum(Jan 09 2018 6:34PM):
I think the people were afraid of the angel and did not like the unknown, so they thought it was better if he was killed. I think that's why the woman was happy that he left in the end and did not try to stop him.
Isabel Arroyo(Jan 12 2018 12:49PM):
I don't think that they actually know what an angel looks like and they are just assuming. You can also clearly tell that he needs help and is not getting any, and they should try to help him understand what is going on.
Karsyn Bierbaum(Jan 09 2018 6:36PM):
The people seem to treat anyone who is different or unlike them poorly or like they are just there for their entertainment.
Isabel Arroyo(Jan 12 2018 12:43PM):
I think that the neighbors and family will soon be punished for their actions of not being kind to the angel. I also think that it is going to a lesson that just because someone looks different doesn't mean you should treat them differently.
Lauren Grover(Feb 05 2018 3:31AM):
It's interesting that the priest does not think that the man seemed like an angel. I wonder what he thinks an angel would be like. A
Isabel Arroyo(Jan 12 2018 12:46PM):
I think it's very important that the author chose to use the word prisoner and pitiful to describe the angle. This further shows that he is being treated unfairly and needs to be helped and treated better.
Dylan Perkins(Jan 17 2018 2:51PM):
The passage here shows the Pelayo and Elisenda are trying to help the angel. So they gave him a raft some fresh food and water.
Jaden Klebba(Jun 05 2018 9:00PM):
I feel bad for the old man! He was only there to help. Pelayo was negatively influenced by the majority's judgment. I wonder why the consequence of having an angel in your house would be death.
Jane White(Nov 07 2017 1:27PM):
I feel that since so many people seem to revere him, they should give him a better place to stay. Keeping him in the chicken coop seems harsh.
Brenda Paull(Nov 09 2017 3:25PM):
I agree. People can really be cruel. If they thought that he was an angel I would have thought that they would try to treat him well so as not to anger him.
Asher Merchent(Nov 30 2017 12:51PM):
A lot of the words and actions reminded me of how people would treat an animal they did not care about. They caged him in, branded him, and fed him things no human would eat. It was like they were running a zoo, charging people to come see him.
Student Kate Nelson(Nov 29 2017 11:56AM):
I think that the "wise neighbor" isn't really that wise. The story doesn't say much about him/her and he/she. Why would angels eat mothballs any way? (P) (A)
Isabel Arroyo(Jan 12 2018 12:54PM):
I think it is important that even kind people threw rocks at him, this shows how when things happen people act out of their nature for some reason. I also think its despicable that people tried to make money off of him.
Dylan Perkins(Jan 17 2018 2:56PM):
They treated the angel that way because the angel represents in the story Jesus and they didnt the same exact thing to Jesus as they did here. And this is not unusual to do back then because if anyone had something different then anyone they would punish
Lilla Carroll(Jan 27 2018 4:25PM):
Again, this story shows how humans can become selfish and take advantage of their power when they want something for themselves.
more
The fact that they were picking his feathers out in hopes that they might be healed is a prime example. Throwing rocks and burning him when he sleeps also shows how people think that everything is responsible for their happiness and entertainment.
Erin Coleman(Mar 09 2018 1:33PM):
This is so sad. Why would people do such a thing? These "kind" people showed who they really were during this moment.
Jaden Klebba(Jun 05 2018 9:13PM):
So far, the angel has done nothing to harm. It's weird that the neighbor and priest knew so much about angels yet everyone was so amazed. Maybe it was a common legend or tale told in their town.
Jane White(Nov 07 2017 1:29PM):
I can see how this is magical realism. This story is making having wings and other seemingly magical things happen seem normal.
Michael Simutis(Jan 11 2018 5:43PM):
The owners do not care about the angel. That is why there is no mention of them being sad at the end, because they do not care. C
Kate Southerland(Feb 15 2018 2:32PM):
Why does this version of the text include these annotations/analyzations on the side? Is this an excerpt from a textbook?
more
Jaden Klebba(Jun 05 2018 9:18PM):
I think the message here is that even though we all have certain troubles, there are other things that we should be grateful for, even if it's not the answer to our main problem.
more
Or that everyone has something that disables them from happiness, but there are other things that you should be grateful for to overcome that disability.
Asher Merchent(Nov 30 2017 12:56PM):
I think you are right about that. It seems strange to treat something holy with such disregard. They seemed to treat themselves and their child well. They didn't even clean the coop for the angel's benefit, only so they wouldn't have to smell it.
Jack Naglick(Dec 29 2017 12:12PM):
I think that they may have been scared of the angel. Perhaps they thought that the angel would take their child. (P)
I enjoy meteorology, hiking , and studying my Bible. :-)
Mason Kimball(Feb 02 2018 1:53PM):
Remember, these are likely Christian people, meaning they believe in angels, but they also believe in demons, demons are supposed to be deceitfully angel - like, so I wouldn't judge them too harshly for treating this being the way they treated it.
student Tycho Collins(Nov 27 2017 5:55AM):
I wonder what happened after since it is a mystery at the end that people wanna know "life but an imaginary dot over the sea".
Student Kate Nelson(Nov 29 2017 12:05PM):
Why is the family bothering to keep him somewhere if he is an annoyance? If they are going to treat him badly, they should give him to someone else who will treat him kindly. (A)
Kate Southerland(Feb 15 2018 2:34PM):
This is a truly despicable way to treat anyone, let alone an angel. The characters in the story must have somehow "taught him a lesson" about patience (again, in an awful way) and that is how he is supposedly retiring to heaven/flying away.
more
Asher Merchent(Nov 30 2017 12:43PM):
These lines really sum up the concept of magical realism, the idea that there is something logical and natural (the design of his wings) mixed with something fantastic (that a man would even have wings).
Asher Merchent(Nov 30 2017 12:47PM):
Maybe the angel had come to Earth as part of his punishment. It had been mentioned earlier that he might be a fallen angel. His endurance and patience may have been enough to earn his place back in Heaven.
I enjoy meteorology, hiking , and studying my Bible. :-)
Mason Kimball(Feb 02 2018 1:55PM):
This doesn't happen, once an angel falls it's condemned to hell for eternity, however, since this isn't based on real-life, it could happen here.
Lauren Grover(Feb 05 2018 3:35AM):
This could be the case, but with magical realism, there are an infinite number of possibilities. The concept of this genre is so interesting to me, because it offers so many possibilities.
Bryn McCarthy(Feb 02 2018 3:00PM):
I'm not validating at all what they did, but in the back of their minds, they were probably scared and had no idea how to handle the situation.

I like how the people ignored the wings of the old man, like even though the old man was different they decided to help him anyways, they took the difference away from the equation and helped him. Which I think people should be more like that in our world ©
