There is a big issue of overcrowding in animal shelters and humane societies and this is due to people not spaying or neutering their dogs and then breeding their pets and keeping or selling them instead of adopting other dogs. According to the Humane Society of the United States on humanesociety.org “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet” (Humane Sec. 1). Many animals that are bought from stores come from a thing which is called a puppy mill. A basic description of a puppy mill is a “large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is placed above the well-being of animals” (ASPCA, “Closer” PAR 1). The act buying dogs from puppy mills is a problem, but perhaps adopting dogs from an animal shelter or humane society might help resolve this issue.

Lila Mundt Lila Mundt (Jul 13 2017 9:44PM) : Are you talking about the issue of not spaying and neutering animals? Or the issue of buying puppies from puppy mills? You could talk about both but make sure to make it cohesive.

Throughout the United States many people are buying the pet dogs from stores that receive their animals from puppy mills. The problem with receiving a dog from one of these places is the fact that tons of these animals are known to have terrible health problems. Kristine Lacoste talks about the health problems of puppy mill animals in her article. She mentions some of the problems dogs are diagnosed with are:

Even though some of these problems can be diagnosed within any animal it is fairly common for puppy mill dogs to develop these problems. Because people are breeding their pets and using puppy mills, there ar many unwanted dogs that cause an overcrowding in shelters and eventually death to animals that do not get adopted. This can be prevented if people begin to adopt the dogs that are in humane societies and animal shelters.

There is a common phrase that people use that goes “Adopt Don’t Shop”. By saying this people are saying exactly what it sounds like: adopt animals, do not shop for them. The Humane Society of the United States, states a good reason to adopt rather than shop and that is:

Overburdened shelters take in millions of stray, abused, and lost animals every year, and by adopting an animal, you’re making room for others. Not only are you giving more animals a second chance, but the cost of your adoption goes directly towards helping those shelters better care for the animals they take in! (Humane Sec. 8).

By adopting an animal, the article is saying you give the dog a second chance at life. In Muncie, Indiana, their animal shelter was suffering the issue of overcrowding. Due to that problem, they were offering a lower adoption fee for two days, Because of "a dangerously high population of animals" at Muncie Animal Care and Services, the shelter will offer a $5 adoption special Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24” (Star Press PAR 5). The shelter in Muncie is lowering the adoption price in order to stop the overcrowding issue. Rather than euthanizing the dogs and cats at their shelter they were trying to find another way to help lower the count of animals within their animal shelter.
