Arhimed je sa inženjeskog stanovišta ukazao na značaj primene poluge. On je svojim radovima ukazao i na praktičnu primenu poluge. Čuvena je njegova izjava- Dajte mi tačku oslonca pa ću da pomerim celu Zemlju.

Poluga je prost alat koji nam omogućava da manjom silom uravnotežimo veću silu i da uz manje napora izvršimo određen rad . Poluga je svako čvrsto telo koje se može obrtati oko neke osovine ili uporišta na osloncu. Sila kojom poluga vrši rad naziva se radna sila-aktivna sila (F). Sila koju ona savladava zove se teret-sila otpora (G).

Poluga je sistem u kojem na čvrsto telo koje se oslanja na nepokretni oslonac deluju najmanje dve sile. Od mesta delovanja tih sila zavisi efekat njihovog delovanja. Mesto delovanja se određuje od oslonca. Najkraće rastojanje od oslonca do pravca delovanja sile zove se krak sile.
