Vazduh u troposferi nema iste fizičke osobine i zato se ona sastoji od različitih vazdušnih masa. Te razlike nastaju usled nejednakog priliva sunčeve energije na različitim geografskim širinama i zbog različitog zagrevanja i hlađenja kopna i mora. Da bi vazdušna masa dobila određene osobine ona mora duže vreme mirovati ili se sporo kretati iznad neke oblasti. Na taj način ona poprima njene osobine - temperaturu i vlažnost. Prostor iznad koga se formirala neka vazdušna masa zove se izvorišna oblast. To može da bude voda ili kopno. Vazdušne mase obrazovane iznad mora nazivaju se maritimne, i one uvek donose vlagu a iznad kopna kontinentalne, i one su uglavnom suve. Vazdušne mase mogu da zauzimaju vrlo velike površine, do 2 miliona km kvadratnih, da se prostiru u dužinu od 5000km i u visinu do 20km. Zato se unutar jedne vazdušne mase po više dana zadržava isto vreme. Vazdušne mase se kreću. To kretanje je relativno sporo i potrebno je nekoliko dana da pređu određeni prostor. Pri tome oni menjaju svoje osobine jer su izložene spoljašnim uticajima-maritimne postaju kontinentalne, tople postaju hladne i obratno. Prema izvorišnoj oblasti postoje 4 tipa vazdušnih masa, odnosno Arktičke (antarktičke),poreklom iz polarnih oblasti, polarne iz viših geografskih širina, tropske iz suptropskog i ekvatorijalne iz ekvatorijalnog pojasa. U našu zemlju najviše prodiru hladan polarni vazduh iz Finskoskandinavije i Sibira i topao tropski vazduh iz oblasti Azorskih ostrva, Sredozemnog mora i severne Afrike.

Prilikom kretanja vazdušne mase se ne mešaju, osim u zoni u kojoj se dodiruju i koja može biti široka do 100km. Taj uzan granični pojas koji razdvaja dve različite vazdušne mase naziva se vazdušni front. On se ne pruža horizontalno već koso i jednim delom dodiruje zemljinu površinu. Na njemu uvek nastaju vremenske promene. Vazdušni frontovi mogu da budu hladni i topli.

Hladni front se stvara pri kretanju hladne vazdušne mase, koja se kao teža podvlači ispod toplog vazduha i prisiljava ga da se brzo uzlazno kreće. Zato dolazi do nagle kondenzacije vodene pare i izlučivanja obilnih padavina. Leti često praćenih nepogodama, na manjim površinama. Pri prelasku hladnog fronta preko nekog mesta nastupa hladnije vreme.

Topli front nastaje usled prodora toplog vazduha. On se, kao lakši, lagano izdiže iznad hladne vazdušne mase, hladi se, vodena para se kondenzuje i izlučuju se sitne ali dugotrajne padavine u vidu kiše ili snega koji zahvataju površine do 400km. Po njegovom prelasku nastupra toplije vreme.
