Hey, did you know that almost every ecosystem on Earth contains viruses? Join Dr. Binocs as he gives you a joyride of information about the most spectacular organism of this world, a VIRUS!
This is very similar to the video that my previous job created and utilized to inform our students about the coronavirus. Working at a child care center, when all in person learning became remote, our team had to brainstorm on how to keep students engaged and learn about what was happening around them. Our wonderful Puppetry instructor, Andy Gaukel, created a puppetry video to showcase to our students. A link is provided below:
This video was very informative while being creative and entertaining. Children will especially gravitate towards this because of the cartoons and animations. While learning all about viruses students also learn important vocabulary like bacterium, cell, and DNA. I even learned about the memory cell, something that I wasn’t aware of.
There are many benefits to using visuals as a tool to educate your students. A few of these benefits are it helps some students store information longer, it aids in better comprehension and it drives motivation. I remember plenty of times when I was younger the teacher would wheel in the t.v (they don’t do that anymore) and we all would become so excited about whatever it is that we were going to be watching.
Yes Juanita! I agree with your comments on how beneficial visuals can be as instructional tools when teaching various content. Visuals help students with different learning styles gain knowledge through the outlet they learn best through which in this case could be visually or auditory.
Another outlet to teach about viruses and germs and the importance of hygiene could be through hands-on demonstrations such as seen in the youtube link I provided below:
The visuals allow for a different mode for learning for young children that by simply reading a story or explaining to them will have. Young children learn and pick up a lot of information from videos that capture attention making different modes important.
Like said many children love cartoon and using this will easily capture their mind and easier for them to remember and share what they got from the video. Same should also be applied for students in higher grade level. Their interest should be pinpointed and used to not only engage them but also motivate and have them participate in their learning. I believe children feel empower when they feel they are involved and responsible for their education too.
