I'm noticing how with Quinaya out of their life the coloring has become darker more grayish-toned. This might be a way to signify she was a source of light in their lives, and their life is darker without it.

EXCELLENT Observation – WAY TO GO! I agree with this, it indeed does and I noticed something different, and did not notice this exact aspect right away!
Robyn G(Jul 18 2021 10:53AM):
I loved the use of real children base media in this book, Amazing world of gumball, minions, etc. It gives a semblance of realism to it.
I do think incorporating pop culture icons into this makes sense – and indeed shows the reality of this incident, this event, actually happening in real life.
I see the switch to Spanish and not switching to language earlier in the graphic novel as a means of showing what happens when you truly have to internalize another culture, and not from a distance. Does this make sense?

FOOD, ACHACHI, WHAT MAMI HAS Bought ME FOR COLE A BOWL! AFTER MY HEART, THIS LORD OF FRANCE HAS BEEN LEGACY TO VISIT YOU.

Translation and GOOGLE
more
I think also, well do you think this might have been on purpose? For the reason of knowing we would have to translate (most that do not know Spanish) and realize Google does NOT translate the true meaning – you have to immerse and know the language for it to truly make sense!
Yes, it is sad and is truly shows what happens when another country (U.S.) tries to know what is best for another and not follow that country’s rules/guidelines, etc – I felt this after seeing this part of the graphic novel.
Robyn G(Jul 18 2021 11:10AM):
This is really making me think the point of this story is that everyone is connected and experiences lost in some way. so it's important to build close bonds without regrets.
Yes, as a frame tale (several stories going on within the main story)
I see this as a story about attachment from the grandparents and learning about himself more through another culture, that he probable had not energy or interest in before this little girl happened in his life! Also a story about other countries, the perception, and the reality of those views, ALSO a story just about respecting other nationalities, countries, etc.
Robyn G(Jul 18 2021 11:12AM):
ok, so like having never met my father, I always assume media interpretations weren't that far off, to be honest. And less you lived like a Disney character.
Disney, an symbol for everything being “perfect” (we see that is not the case in this story – does have stereotypes in their films on how certain roles act, etc -
Robyn G(Jul 18 2021 11:21AM):
He disowned him after the police came. I don't know how I feel about that, especially think about the relationship they had. I understand I though because he was wrong.
Their relationship is magnified even more with this police incident that occurred, it appears for sure in this slide and we realize the separation now has been more public, I think there was a separation there before – just not so evident as the son was growing up, but the grandfather caused much more of that than the son.
Robyn G(Jul 18 2021 11:24AM):
Why could they not just adopted the kid normally on the record? It doesn't seem like they would have anything against them as far as Child Protective Services is concerned.

I am sure, I see them in New York as well – and can you imagine the grandfather doing this on his own? I can’t, LOL.
