Arelis F(Dec 01 2021 10:00AM):
Explicit instruction for students is crucial. It gives them an entry point. My students need lots of scaffolds and its a great feeling when little by little these scaffolds can be removed
JOYCE F(Nov 30 2021 10:06AM):
I would really love to see a video of this happening as I am not really sure how to get started. I myself learn from modeling.
You will see something like this in the session on authenticity. There are not many videos available. It would be great if we could create some from District 30.

Bena K(Nov 29 2021 6:39PM):
I am wondering how we could make sure that teachers start with a plan in order for this to work. I am interested in how you always start with a purpose.
DANIELLE M(Dec 01 2021 10:04AM):
I was also thinking about the importance of planning . . . especially backwards planning. That is the key to this work.
Arelis F(Dec 01 2021 10:02AM):
I love giving my students a voice. It is empowering for them. I need to be able to integrate this more often. I always say I will but time constrictions often don't allow
Bianca M(Dec 01 2021 10:01AM):
I think it's very important for students' to feel pride in their culture and where they come from. It's also important for the class to learn about each student and learn that we are each unique and different in our own way!
more
One way we do this at our school is by creating a SS project in the beginning of the year where the students research their culture and share their country with the class. They also share traditions, holidays, recipes, music, etc. Some students also dress up in their culture’s clothing. This makes students very engaged and excited to learn about one another!
Britney P(Nov 30 2021 10:01AM):
This was my favorite part of the slides for today because we got to see different things and learn how the students can bring in their artifacts and they can discuss similarities and differences.
Nicole G(Nov 30 2021 10:04AM):
My school has recently transitioned from TC reading/writing teaching points to explicit learning targets. Sometimes it's been a challenge to be as explicit as possible when the original TC teaching points use very "fluffy" language.
more
It was helpful for me to see examples of how to take a learning target and make it as specific as possible
DANIELLE M(Dec 01 2021 10:05AM):
I would love to see an example of this! We are using TC as well . . . it would be great to see a side by side. How do you incorporate the what and how of the teaching point to explicit learning targets?
Katelynn R(Nov 30 2021 10:02AM):
The explicit learning targets are much more clear and useful. The challenge for me would be to modify the learning targets for students with IEPs. They need the explicitness combined with language they can understand.
Britney P(Nov 30 2021 10:14AM):
I am a new teacher and in my school we have been doing this for a while and the learning target we do the "what" and the "how" and I love this so much because I get to see the student break down the learning target.
Kleanthie L(Nov 30 2021 10:15AM):
This made me reflect on how learning targets are written and shared with students. This is important because it shows the what and how. It provides clear expectations as to what students have to complete in this task.

The expectations are clear as to how students will complete the task.
Denisse R(Nov 30 2021 9:59AM):
I think this slide made me reflect on how I write my own learning targets and I began thinking about how explicit they are.
Samantha P(Dec 01 2021 9:58AM):
I really enjoy the comparison of the learning targets versus the explicit learning targets. It is important for students to be given that extra element of HOW to develop the topic, use linking words, etc.
Ben E(Dec 01 2021 10:04AM):
This makes me realize that while I am doing some of this, I am not doing this as much as I can. I am going to make sure I plan co-created lessons and give students more voice in developing their own learning.
Maggie N(Nov 30 2021 10:09AM):
I think that using sentence frames during co-creation of learning targets would be especially beneficial for ENL students.
DANIELLE M(Dec 01 2021 10:02AM):
It might be interesting to invite students to add to this. . What does persistence look like?
Why is it important?
When do YOU need it most?
How can we celebrate it when we see it?
Ben E(Dec 01 2021 10:02AM):
In reflecting, I used to provide students with choice a lot more. With learning a new curriculum, it has been difficult to do this as much as I used to since I don't know my curriculum as well.
Ben E(Dec 01 2021 10:01AM):
I like that there are both student-friendly learning targets on the left as well as more explicit learning targets for the teacher to help guide us through the lesson.

If you send me the sample from TC we could work together to create the why and how as a model for others.

I look forward to hearing about how you implement some of this and how students respond.

The key is to look at where you are in the process and take steps to become more student-centered and explicit. One step at a time is fine.

This made me understand that I need to include students more in planning.
