This allows students to get feedback. Once they know they are on track to succeed, they can complete the task. This promotes persisting.

I see this as very useful in helping teachers to give feedback. In terms or clarifying expectations and guiding the work process, the checklist might be more student-friendly.
This student also gave lots of attention to details. Perhaps if the student had checked the guidelines before submitting the work, he would have added the intermediate directions. They could also use the guidelines to check each other’s work.
I wonder if the student just didn’t realize all that was expected (didn’t use checklist) or is not capable or making a compass and key. There is some evidence of engagement and attention to details here.
