Do the students see the connection between character traits and the theme? It may be easier for students to determine the theme by analyzing the plot.

One way to explore theme is to consider:
What is the problem/goal?
What attempts are made to resolve the problem or reach the goal?
What happened in the end?
How did the characters react?
What is the author telling us or the message of the story?

The color coding is effective. You can use an additional color to show where students explain details from the text and how they support the theme. Then it is easy to see how well the different criteria have been met.
