2 Journeys Through the Red, White & Blue, a documentary produced by a team of New York City youth of color, is specifically designed to address the interests and concerns of their peers. Blending humor, plain-spoken language, civics lessons, and interviews with friends, family members, local political leaders and community activists, this engaging documentary puts a face on "the youth vote." Following the stories of Brian, Shon, and Tidiane, the films offer three unique explorations into the voting process: on the balance between local and national politics, on the legacy of African American voting rights, and on the rights and possibilities for immigrant participation.

Do they think these controversies are important

Or why do they think these controversies happened at all? It would also be interesting to see where students/citizens choose to get their information about politics (if any do) and which sources of information they trust, in these times of media inundation.

I think it’s really strong to have the audio overlap as the messages appear on screen. It also points to the idea that media tries to overwhelm the public with information, and it can be hard to not be influenced in a particular way. It’s a call to be critical about the media’s voice.

Generally speaking, I think background music in documentaries needs to be kept to a very low volume when the dialogue is the main focus. Even at nearly quiet volumes, people will still recognize the music’s role in livening up the scene, while not taking away from the message of what’s being stated. Common mistake.

Again, as a viewer I’m starving for what this scene suggests: that youth have important questions and ideas about what is happening in their neighborhood, and that they can build on each others insights to make sense of the political situation they are living in.

What I am suggesting might be too hard to coordinate, but even if there were new people with questions for the Councilman brought along for this interview segment, a moment where Councilman Martinez has an open discussion with our host Brian and local citizens could have been very compelling. Thoughts?
