Zueignung.

Wie ihr aus Dunst und Nebel um mich steigt;

Und manche liebe Schatten steigen auf;
Gleich einer alten, halbverklungnen Sage
Kommt erste Lieb und Freundschaft mit herauf;

Die Seelen, denen ich die ersten sang;

Das strenge Herz, es fühlt sich mild und weich;

You are approaching again, swaying figures,
who had once shown themselves to the gloomy gaze. Am I trying to hold you this time? Do I feel my heart still inclined to that delusion? You urge yourselves! Now well, so may ye reign,
As ye rise from vapor and mist around me;
My bosom feels youthfully shaken
From the magic breath that streaks your train.

You bring with you the images of happy days,
And some dear shadows rise;
Like an old, half-saga legend,
first love and friendship come up;
The pain becomes new, it repeats the lamentation of
life labyrinthically erring course,
And calls the good ones, which, to
deceive beautiful hours of happiness, vanished before me.

They do not hear the following songs,
The souls to whom I sung the first;
Destroyed is the friendly throng,
Decay, ah! The first reverberation. My song sounds to the unknown crowd,
Your applause itself makes my heart bang,
And what else
is delighting in my song, If it still lives, Is mistaken in the world scattered.

And I am seized by a long-weaned longing
For that quiet and solemn feast of spirits. There now floats in undefined tones. My lisping song, like that of a haze,
A shudder seizes me, tears follow tears,
The strict heart feels mild and soft;
What I possess, I see as in the wide,
And what disappeared, becomes to me realities.
