I find this quote to be impacting for when someone such as myself thinks about an A+ I imagine perfect. I feel most motivated people in this day and age work to be a perfect student, person, etc. An A+ is the perception of perfect. From this description the listener can envision Corita to be a perfect person. She seems like a remarkable person, well deserving of an A+ person.

Although Sister Corita has had many difficult life obstacles she has had the strength to persist through and touch so many lives while in the process of doing so.

I think this artwork really represents Sister Corita because everyone in the video was singing her praises. She seemed like a genuinely kind and caring woman considering some of her art is political and protests what was happening in the 60’s. She used her devotion to religion to make art that mattered to people even if this got her into trouble with the church.

With her positive thoughts of the world, Sister Corita was able to touch many lives and share her knowledge.

The biggest component of collage art is using everything you see as inspiration. Sister Corita used ads, magazine articles, religious figures, and even nature in her art. Most people say abstract is the most expressive form of art and even though this isn’t abstract, it does compel emotion. I wonder if using common materials is used to further her message or if that’s just where she found inspiration.

Sister Corita’s art was unique for her time and it was interesting to see the influences that impacted her. The most influential things were the time in which she was creating and the community that she was in. Her art also evolved over time and it is interesting to see how the details can change but the core design inspiration is really the same as it is from the same artist.

In this area of the video many of sister corita’s pieces of art looked very creative like the dinosaur and the very colorful blanket.

During this time, a very popular movement was happening in Los Angeles. There were many nuns doing several things in helping the religious community.

Sister Magdalene Mary could be seen as a part of Sister Corita’s personal “Hero’s Journey”, that being her call to adventure. If Sister Magdalene Mary had not done the things she has been described to have done, Sister Corita may not have reached the amount of people she did.

Sister Magdelene was a pillar to Sister Corita’s success due to Sister Magdelene’s unrelenting push to succeed. She would push Corita up to speak and helped her become the respected woman she was at the time, and still is today.

Sister Magdalene was the one to guide Corita during all these times. She was the head of the department. She was a big reason to how Sister Corita had succeeded.

“She erupted, she just was like a little firework going off all the time.” This quote from the video really shows how creative Sister Corita’s mind was. Her teacher tells listeners that it was one of the most interesting and exciting classes she had ever had.

Sister Corita was described as a great teacher by her students. She had high expectations from them and constantly encouraged them to do more than they thought was possible. She had a high standard of excellence for herself and also for the students that she taught.

Sister Corita gave her students the courage to draw even when some of them didn’t even know they could. She showed everyone the artist inside themselves.

At this point in the video, there has been numerous comments from fellow students and comrades of Sister Corita, that speak of her optimistic mindset. She was said to have “…brought joy to all she did”, “…she was the spirit of the college”, and “…seemed to see the best in people.” The impact of Sister Corita’s attitude stayed with all of her students and had a lasting impact on them and her own legacy.

As the video talks about Sister Corita and how good of a person she was to others, the art in the back is an immaculate choice. It states, “He has set kings down from their throne and lifted up the humble.” This is impactful because it is implying that she treated everyone the same, whether they be kings or povertous.

When people care about you, they can push you to levels you never thought you had in you. When it seems like you have nothing left, they find more out of you somehow. Its easy to believe in yourself and work hard for someone who makes you feel valued. Sister Corita was this to her students, a teacher AND a mentor.

Sister Corita created a new viewpoint to life and it’s great secrets and mysteries.

I love this message from the video because being open to everything means seeing the world in a different way. There’s so much stuff we miss out on because we aren’t open to new thoughts, new ideas, or new activities. Also, Sister Corita helped so many people see like an artist and create things they never imagined they would. She made them go to carwashes or just people watch to get inspiration. Her art is evidence that everything can be inspiration.

Sister Corita said to get rid of all your assumptions. Which we should because it can change our views on life in a tremendous way.By not having those assumptions it allows you to be open to new ideas and possibilities which is what she would tell her students. Everything can be a source of inspiration if we open our minds to it.

Sister Corita Kent firmly believed in everything being a source of inspiration, even sources in unlikely places. She was said to take her students on field trips to a shopping mall and look at the window displays, or to a random store to find the inspiration.

It mentions being open to everything and in doing so everything can be an inspiration. Sister Corita did this in her art and was constantly creating new things. This is an important lesson that can be learned from her life and artwork.

Sister Corita brought other people to think the way she did, which was to stay positive and look at everything as an opportunity. You are able to take something out of each experience you come in contact with and she taught people that.

Over and over again, the idea of Sister Corita and fellow friends, colleagues, and peers going out and “observing” everyday items more closely and with a more astute awareness is evermore present. Sister Corita was one who could take typical daily practices, observe them, participate in “The Art of Noticing,” and Think Flexibly, or utilize an approach from outside of the box to work from what she had noticed and been inspired by.

I see the picture frame or word finder that Is also used in the classroom and I thought it was cool how she used it to make many pieces of art.

She assigned the students to take an index card with a hole cut in the middle and look through it at certain things. She was teaching them how important parts of the world are and how to see beneath the surface to see the tiny details.

Sister Corita wanted to look at the world in small pieces at a time. Her and her students had little viewfinders so that they could only focus on little parts. The students created art from these small images, and Corita told them it would be more creative that way.

An interesting thing that was mentioned in this video is to be continually looking at things and really see them. It is important to be observant and purposeful in the looking as well to find things and continually grow and learn from these things.

Just as we discussed in class, it takes several exposures to vocabulary words for one to become familiar and comfortable with that term. Similarly, as presented by Corita to many of those close to her, if we only look at something once, we will miss something and not necessarily notice something spectacular, but if we afford ourselves the opportunity to look over and over again, we will be able to observe something special and take note of such.

Sister believed in this gospel whole heartedly. She believed that she was responsible for her gift of art and haring it with others. She gave the gift of new eyes to all of her students. She encourage people to see inspiration in everything and see the purpose that the world and the people give us.

Many people may consider someone who understands their own talent to be boastful and to have a lack of humility. Sister Corita was humble, as she was a woman of good faith. She employed the words of the gospel to utilize the talents she was blessed with and she shared them with the world. I relate to this in an academic sense, as many people believe I am “boastful” about my grades when I really just try to take pride in them.

Sister Corita was described by many as a hard worker, she took on the tasks that were physically demanding and was in her studio many hours of the day creating and scheming new ideas for her art.

The words “workpower” truly stuck out to me, as I believe Sister Corita intended. This piece, I believe, was meant to be a call to action for individuals to work towards bring peace and joy into each others.

In the art that is shown on the screen it says, “Our personality is as full of grief and private torment as a clown is always said to be.” I love this statement because it is ironic. Clowns are not seen as full of grief, but rather have a smile painted on their face at all times. This connects the “private torment” to the clowns, as if clowns were sad, their smile would say otherwise. This is the same with being private about your struggles.

Sister Corita’s way of expressing gratitude for her God-given talents is something that we could all learn from, as encouraging others by showing them your talents can inspire them to do something they otherwise would not have done.

Throughout my life I have had many leaders. Typically the leaders I encounter present themselves to be people who not only work hard for themselves but also ensure those around her are working hard too. Corita is a person who could summon one to be successful just from her energy and motivation given to others. It is unique when one can do this and lead others along with themselves.

what did the term “power up” mean to sister Corita. Whatever sister Corita did she always one up to herself and made her students one of themselves too. In a sense all of her artwork powered up the next. She was constantly exploring new ideas and planting the seed of new eyes and her students brains. She truly shows that art can be just about anything you wanted to be.

Sister Corita believed in herself and her work. As she experimented in her work she always had something new and never had a RIGHT way of making art.

She wrote her work out and showed it to people in her life. but these people did not think it was “right”.

She was always going in different directions with her art work and wanting to do different projects for the girls at college.

Her work was described as incredibly unique, it was unlike any other kind of work at the time. She used parts of literature, ads, labels, and other things of that nature to create her art.

Many of those close to Sister Corita discuss how she was always doing things her own way and creating art in a manner nobody had even thought of before. In doing so, she took a risk, she put herself out there in a space in which nobody had put themselves previously. She did this with confidence, and because of this, she made a name for herself, not by staying in line with the flock and dong the traditional, but rather by standing out, being different, and stepping into the unorthodox.

I really appreciate her creation of acceptance of other races and by her creating this type of art, it may motivate others with malicious thoughts about other races can change through her art.

I love this piece of artwork. Often when magazines or commercials or even TV shows use models they are not usually black people. Young black kids, especially young black women, usually lack confidence because of the misrepresentation or the lack of representation.

In life, sometimes we grow and no longer have need for some people in our lives anymore, we become different people and no longer desire to or need to have certain people in our lives. A friend of mine once told me “if you spend a long time with a certain group of people, you’re not really growing”.

Sister Corita had a grasp on the issues that occurred in the world around her, and she exhibited that grasp through her artwork. In her piece titled “Stop the Bombing”, one would assume she was discussing military style conflict when she was really expressing her wish to fight the stereotypes that nuns received. She utilized a political poster style to provide depth in the piece, while still creating a notable work of art.

Sister Corita took everything that was going on during the time of her peak personally; she felt as though she could share the message through her art work. For example this piece of artwork is simple, but has many different takeaways.

Sister Corita used her artwork to shine light onto troubling issues going on at the time. Many people thought of her as a “danger to the faith”. Sister Corita had a gift, her voice. Her artwork began to transform at this time into simple, pastel pieces of work. She was grateful for every aspect of her life, she lived without being envious.

Sister Corita had her artwork judged by the church. She had to leave the church because this was not faithful and it was not what she was supposed to do. She was placed in a box when she wanted to be free.

Sister Corita Kent slowed down majorly during the later portion of her career. This was easily seen through her art work, she went from brights and acrylics to dull pastels. Sister Corita lived a very busy and energetic life, so when she stepped back and started living a more private life some didn’t know how to take it.

The change in art style depicts the change in Corita’s life, having been allowed to express her creative capability with no restrictions, to being told to renounce her vows. Which ended up taking a large tole on Corita’s life and livelihood,as she became more introverted and stuck to her own world and thoughts.

I think this art is supposed to correlate with the idea that Sister Corita is a PROGRESSIVE nun, as supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community would have been very progressive for the time.

Sister Corita mentions how the first and second part of life should be or could be very different from one another. I found it interesting how she mentioned that she was still trying to figure out the second part of her own life. It makes the listener become reflective of their past as well as thinking about what their future may look like as well.

When I first heard this quote in class it really dug deep at me. I’ve had many many teachers over the years I’ve been in school and I can only remember a select few. Those few are the ones that really made an impression on me. When you have a teacher like the sister she gives you a new way of looking at life and completely Alters your state of mind. That kind of thing stays with you for the rest of your life and you never forget that person for giving you that gift. I think the sister stayed with a lot of her students throughout their lives almost like a birthmark or a freckle. Not really seen by everyone else, but there with you none the less.

When teachers start teaching it is because they want to teach people what they feel like they know about. In Sister Corita’s life it was teaching people about art. Teachers can help shape people into who they are as a person. Which for the teachers is putting some knowledge they have into you.
