Aaron R: This is a subtle parallel between the land lady and Janie. Janies husband is also dead, however Janie has moved on while the landlady is still alone, having only Janie as company. This could possibly foreshadow Janie and Tea Cake splitting up.

Aaron R: The simile used to describe Janies veil shows how she uses it to hide her true emotions. She does not care as much as some of the other towns people even though the deceased was her husband.
